1820's Jacob's store (note horse and buggy) |
|
Jacob's store aka the Rosebud Tattoo old location The shop was located at 5 Elm St., in the historic brick building known as "Jacob's block", the first building on the right going north into Saco on U.S. Rt.1, on the banks of the beautiful Saco river, which runs from the Atlantic ocean, all the way through Maine and over to North Conway, NH. In 1817, a two-acre lot was purchased by brothers, Benjamin and Moses Jacobs. First, Ben built his hipped roof, two story house on the corner of Storer/Elm in 1820.Then shortly thereafter, Moses built his house next door, and together, they built the large, 3 story brick building in 1826 that currently houses Rosebud Tattoo and 5 residential units. However, the business venture seemed cursed when brother Moses died that same year, and Benjamin went bankrupt the following year, losing all three buildings in the process. It is considered a very rare survivor of Federal Period architecture, which is typified by a square building, with a low-pitched hipped roof and towering, thin chimneys rising from the outer wall planes, granite window caps set flush to the wall, which all combined, make the building a nice prelude to the historic buildings coming up a few more blocks north. In these days of "big box' architecture, it's up to us, as a society, to help preserve our past....for it is only in knowing and appreciating our past, can we effectively and respectfully chart our course for the future.
